Peter Van Borssum has fond childhood memories of Galveston and appreciates the advantage that growing up on the island has given him in his second career as a local real estate professional.
One of nine children of Alice and Robert Van Borssum, Peter moved to Galveston with his parents and older siblings when he was 5 years old. He attended St Mary’s Elementary, O’Connell Junior High and graduated from O’Connell High School. The Van Borssum family home was in the Woodrow area of Galveston, just one block from the seawall. Peter warmly remembers the neighborhood and the community. “I remember it being an everyday occurrence to go to the beach for swimming or surfing, or to go crabbing with my father and siblings. I also recall joining friends and neighbors every year on the seawall for the annual Splash Day Parade, and playing lots of tennis on a neighborhood court.”
After high school, Peter attended the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. Upon graduation he was drawn back to the coast where he joined a Houston-based geophysical exploration company and embarked on a 25-year career in the international oilfield services industry. Over the years, Peter’s job responsibilities required travel to all parts of the world and included longer residencies in Anchorage, Alaska, London and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Upon returning to the United States from London Peter and his wife, artist Diane Falkenhagen, settled in Jamaica Beach. “We bought a home on a canal and have been remodeling it ever since! We could have settled anywhere, but the Galveston sand and salt air beckoned and returning home seemed the right thing to do. We don’t regret it one bit, and moving to the West End is proving to be a very positive quality-of-life decision.” When not working, Peter can be found fishing in West Galveston Bay, working in his garden, or walking his two Airedale Terriers, Maddie and Bruno.
“Having the advantage of growing up here means I have an in-depth familiarity with all neighborhoods and all aspects of living on Galveston Island. My experiences with professional IT Systems, business software, health & safety management issues and multi-cultural environments compliment my professional real estate skills. Most importantly, being professionally trained in a service-driven environment compels me to offer the highest quality of customer service. As the world of real estate transactions evolve, it is clear that only technology and first-class service will differentiate real estate practitioners.”
